Course format
Delivered face-to-face in a classroom setting the course will include a combination of PowerPoint presentations, activities and discussions to keep learners engaged.
All learners will receive a handout booklet covering the relevant topics.
Courses are available on an in-house basis to organisations wishing to train a group of staff. We will send one of our expert tutors out to you to deliver the course at your office (or chosen venue). All assessments are now delivered online.
Unfortunately we don’t currently offer a programme of open access dates for this course.
Duration
The course will be delivered across three consecutive days followed by the assessment . Further details on the assessment timings are outlined below.
Course programme
Course times are generally 10:00am – 4:30pm each day and the standard programme is as follows however please note that this may change slightly from course to course.

- Basic principles of energy in the home
- Temperature conversions
- Heating appliances and systems
- Heating and hot water systems
- Control for heating and hot water systems
- Setting programmers/ timers
- Mock simulation exercise
DAY 2
- Calculating electricity consumption of appliances and calculating costs
- Measuring electricity and gas consumption and calculating costs
- Fuel bills
- Comparative costs of fuels and heating systems
- Fuel payment methods and fuel debt
- Mock simulation exercise
- Renewable energy
- Mock assessment
DAY 3
- Measuring energy efficiency of dwellings
- Heat loss
- Insulation
- Energy efficiency schemes/ grant aid
- Dampness and condensation
How will the assessment be delivered?
Assessments are delivered online allowing learners to join remotely.
Assessment information
The assessment is delivered online and split into two parts as follows:
PART 1: SIMULATION BASED ASSESSMENT
- Demonstrate problem-solving abilities using an electricity bill
- Explain how to correctly read a dial meter
- Demonstrate how to set a mechanical programmer and explaining to the assessor the various functions of the programmer.
- Demonstrate how to set a digital programmable room thermostat.
The simulation is a 30-minute controlled assessment that must be observed by an assessor on a set date. This will be delivered online via Zoom.
The assessor will use role play to create a realistic scenario that allows the candidate to demonstrate their skills.
PART 2: OPEN BOOK WRITTEN ASSESSMENT
- Home Heating
- Bills, Meters and Paying for Fuel
- Cutting Down Heat Loss
- Condensation and Dampness
This is a non-controlled assessment, meaning it does not require observation by an assessor.
The assessment will be released to learners upon successful completion of stage 1 (the simulation-based assessment) and they will have 14 days to complete.
The assessment consists of a number of short-answer questions. Open book format meaning that learners are encouraged to refer to course materials and will also be provided with candidate assessment reference documents.

OPEN ACCESS FEES – PER PERSON
Due to low demand, we don’t currently have any open access dates scheduled. If you are interested in attending a face-to-face course please contact NEA to register your interest so we can monitor demand going forward. If demand increases we can schedule in courses accordingly.
IN-HOUSE / GROUP FEES – PER COURSE
Group courses are available upon request. We can accommodate up to 14 learners per course and the dates / times can be arranged to best suit the group.
