Energy Awareness 6281-01 (Level 3 Award)
Aimed at workers who deliver energy advice to households, either face to face or over the phone, this course will cover energy saving methods and other knowledge and skills required to deliver useful advice.
This is our most popular course, running for over 30 years with more than 26,000 learners to date.
For e-learning we recommend that learners have basic knowledge / experience of the subject. For those new to the subject we recommend the classroom based course.
Learners will need basic computer skills to navigate the e-learning (you can view a short sample of the course via the link further down this page).
As this is a level 3 qualification learners will also require basic literacy and numeracy skills. The course and exam will include some written activities as well as calculating fuel bills; calculating running costs of electrical appliances and converting temperatures using simple formulas which will be provided.
The course aims to provide delegates with an understanding of energy advice and the knowledge required to deliver energy advice to householders.
- the efficiency and appropriate use of heating and hot water appliances and systems and the functions of the controls
- domestic fuel cost data using the domestic heat cost (Sutherland) tables
- how to record gas and electricity consumption and work out costs
- payment options for gas and electricity
- insulation methods for improving the energy efficiency of a range of building types
- Government assistance to help householders improve the energy efficiency of their homes, including the Affordable Warmth Obligation of the Energy Company Obligation
- the causes of condensation dampness, how to avoid condensation and remedial actions to combat existing condensation
How will the e-learning course work?
Learners will have access to the course for 8 weeks and be able to study online at a time and location that is convenient to them. They will also receive a set support documents including mock exam papers, activities and handouts to keep for future reference along with a copy of the Energy Advice in the Home book.
When ready, delegates will go on to sit the exam with an NEA registered examiner.
Tutors will be available upon request to assist with specific queries relating to the course content. This is usually done via e-mail or telephone / video call.
Please note that this support is time limited as e-learning is generally self-led however more in-depth tuition can be arranged at an extra cost if required.
Suggested study time
We recommend a minimum of 20 hours to complete the course and prepare for the exam however each learner is different and e-learning offers the flexibility to study at your own pace.
How will the assessment work?
Assessment for this qualification usually takes place face to face however due to the Coronavirus pandemic all face to face delivery is currently on hold and we are offering online assessment in the interim.
Learners must attend an exam session observed by an NEA-registered examiner.
For online exams learners will require a quiet room and two separate electronic devices with internet access, sound and a video camera. Both devices must connect to Zoom (video conferencing platform). Device one will be used to connect to Zoom for the exam to be invigilated (this could be a computer, tablet or mobile phone) and device two will be used to access the online exam forms (this could be a computer or tablet).

The online assessment is split into the following three sections and candidates should set aside a full day for the exam:

- Bills, Meters and Paying for Fuel
- Exam Paper Two (75 minutes)
- Cutting Down Heat Loss
- Condensation and Dampness
- Simulation (30 minutes)
- Setting central heating programmers
- Energy advisor role-play
