The government announced support for heating oil customers in the wake of rising oil prices caused by the US-Israel conflict with Iran.

National Energy Action Head of Policy Matt Copeland says, ‘Today’s announcement recognises just how exposed heating oil households are. These families have no price cap, face sudden price spikes, and must pay steep upfront costs that many simply cannot afford. Our frontline evidence shows people rationing hot water, heating only one room, and those with serious health conditions being put at real risk.

‘The UK Government’s swift response to prioritise limited support for the poorest households, including those in Northern Ireland, where reliance on oil is highest, is welcome. But with volatility far from over, support may need to evolve, including action to remove high minimum delivery thresholds, which lock low-income households out of the market.

‘Unfortunately, this is likely to be just the start. There is a tidal wave coming that could hit electricity and gas customers in July. If this crisis extends that far, Westminster and the devolved nations must be equipped to respond. Financial support will be needed, including a concerted effort to significantly reduce the energy debt that millions of vulnerable households currently face.’
