Domestic Retrofit and Energy Advice Course (in-person)

With energy bills remaining a major concern for households and the UK moving steadily toward its 2050 net-zero target, the need for high‑quality domestic retrofit has never been more important. This non‑technical webinar introduces the core principles of retrofit and the role it plays in improving the comfort, efficiency, and running costs of homes.

Participants will gain an understanding of how energy‑saving measures and tailored energy advice can significantly improve customer experience, reduce fuel bills, and support healthier living environments. The session also explores lessons learned from previous retrofit programmes—highlighting common challenges, what works well, and how to support householders throughout their retrofit journey.

This in-person course is available to Fuel Poverty Forum attendees from non-commercial/ not for profit organisations. Learners must encounter and provide advice to those in or at risk of fuel poverty.

This course is designed for frontline staff working in a range of organisations who want to know more about retrofit, the processes involved and how to support the domestic householder.  Delegates do not need to be working directly in retrofit and do not need any prior technical experience. 

The course aims to increase delegates’ understanding of what retrofit is, what the retrofit process looks like for a domestic householder, while drawing on case studies and using National Energy Action’s unique experiences.  Learners who complete the course will have a better understanding of how to support a client through the process and what support and assistance is available to ensure their experience is as successful as possible.

  • Identify examples of ‘poor’ retrofit and the impact on the householder 
  • Describe the positive impacts retrofit can have on energy efficiency and the householder 
  • Explain lessons learned around successful retrofit 
  • Address misconceptions around retrofit 
  • Identify sources of advice  
  • What retrofit is and why it matters 
  • The retrofit customer journey: stages, touchpoints and challenges 
  • Examples of poor practice and the consequences for householders 
  • Positive impacts and benefits of well-delivered retrofit 
  • Lessons learned from previous retrofit projects 
  • Misconceptions, concerns and how to address them 
  • Sources of advice, guidance and further support 

Please note that the course content will focus mainly on England and Wales. If you are based in Northern Ireland or Scotland and interested in this course, please contact trainingadmin@nea.org.uk before booking so we can discuss the main differences. 

2.5 hour

Delivered face-to-face in a classroom setting the course will include a combination of PowerPoint presentations, activities and discussions to keep learners engaged.

At the end of the course all learners will receive a handout booklet covering the relevant topics.
