Evaluating solar PV with electric heating with North Devon Homes: Electricity tariffs

The ‘Evaluating solar PV with electric heating’ project installed solar PV systems in properties with air-source heat pumps (ASHP), infrared heating panels and electric storage heaters with and without battery storage.
The electricity tariffs report first discussed smart time-of-use electricity tariffs offered by energy suppliers which are suited to different technologies including:
- Electricity tariffs for storage heaters
- Electricity tariffs for heat pumps
- Electricity tariffs for solar PV and batteries
- Electricity tariffs for electric vehicles
The report then looked at electricity costs based on smart meter data from households on the ‘Evaluating solar PV with electric heating’ project. The costs were calculated using typical tariff rates for January 2025 and did not include the standing charge. Electricity costs were calculated before and after the solar PV installations for each of the heating technologies with and without batteries.
