Evaluating solar PV with electric heating with North Devon Homes: Mixergy cylinders
Date: 03rd Jul 2025

The ‘Evaluating solar PV with electric heating’ project installed 18 solar PV systems and 11 Mixergy smart hot water cylinders in socially rented homes. The Mixergy cylinders all had solar diverters which could use excess solar PV generation to power the immersion heater for free.
The ‘Evaluating solar PV with electric heating: Mixergy cylinders’ report assessed the following:
- Improvements in the EPC energy score due to the Mixergy cylinder based on RdSAP 2012
- Resident satisfaction with the Mixergy cylinders and installations issues
- Savings achieved with the Mixergy solar diverter against
- Solar PV generation
- Household electricity import
- Household hot water demand
- Size and type of hot water cylinder and heat sources
Data was available over six months for households with a Direct hot water cylinder which was only heated by the immersion heater. There was also data from homes with air source heat pumps (ASHPs) where the water in the cylinder was heated either by the immersion heater or via a plate heat exchanger for the ASHP.
