Evaluating solar PV with electric heating with North Devon Homes: Main report

The ‘Evaluating solar PV with electric heating’ project assessed the benefits of installing solar PV systems in social housing with different types of electric heating. The properties had a mix of air-source heat pumps (ASHP), infrared heating panels and electric storage heaters with and without battery storage.

The solar PV system sizes ranged from 3.89kW to 5.81kW, with batteries between 6kWh and 13.5kWh in capacity. There were 18 solar PV installations and 11 of these had Mixergy smart hot water cylinders with solar diverters.

The evaluation assessed the:

  • Improvement in EPC energy score under RdSAP 2012 from the installations
  • Resident satisfaction with the installations
  • Room temperatures over the winter heating season
  • Annual solar PV generation, percentage self-consumption of solar generation and the battery charge/discharge
  • Household grid import before and after the installation
  • Electricity consumption of ASHPs from space and water heating and the overall coefficient of performance (COP)
