Fuel Poverty Awareness Day 2026

On Wednesday 18 November 2026, National Energy Action’s Fuel Poverty Awareness Day will shine a light on the scale and impact of fuel poverty on children and their health now and throughout their lives.

Fuel poverty in Northern Ireland

Fuel poverty is particularly acute in Northern Ireland because many households are dependent on heating oil, which is not covered by the energy price cap, and because a higher proportion of homes are located in rural areas with limited access to the gas network. Northern Ireland also operates within a different energy market to Great Britain, contributing to distinct energy affordability challenges.

We will be adding more information just before Fuel Poverty Awareness Day, as we will be releasing new LucidTalk polling.

More than 58,000 households with children under 16 are growing up in fuel poverty in Northern Ireland. Cold homes can negatively impact children’s physical and mental health at such a pivotal time of development. Support National Energy Action’s #FuelPovertyAwarenessDay today.

46% of households with children under 16 in Northern Ireland are in fuel poverty after housing costs. Many families will not have a warm and healthy home. Support National Energy Action’s #FuelPovertyAwarenessDay today.

Introducing Minimum Energy Efficiency Standards and establishing protections similar to Awaab’s Law to Northern Ireland would protect householders by ensuring that homes are safe, healthy and cheaper to heat. Today is National Energy Action’s #FuelPovertyAwarenessDay and we’re calling on the Executive to commit to improving lives for renters across NI.

Almost two thirds of households in Northern Ireland rely on home heating oil. As this is unregulated, it is prone to price hikes and families being unable to afford to buy it in bulk. Today is National Energy Action’s #FuelPovertyAwarenessDay and we’re calling on the Executive to introduce regulatory oversight of the heating oil market.

Northern Ireland needs an ambitious, well-resourced Warm Healthy Homes Fund. It should deliver energy efficiency investment at scale for low-income and vulnerable households, including households with children. Today is National Energy Action’s #FuelPovertyAwarenessDay and we’re calling on the Executive to significantly increase investment in energy efficiency to cut bills, tackle fuel poverty and make homes greener.
