Our response
NEA NI argues that fuel poverty is not adequately recognised in the Equality Impact Assessment (EQIA), particularly as a key adverse impact of underinvestment in housing and energy efficiency.
To somewhat mitigate these impacts, we recommend use of Barnett consequential funding from the UK Government’s Warm Homes Plan to tackle fuel poverty in NI and increase funding for the Affordable Warmth Scheme. We also stress the need for delivery of a properly resourced new Fuel Poverty Strategy with clear targets. We emphasise that tackling fuel poverty is both essential and cost-effective.
