Heating your house the smart way (CP788)
||South Holland District Council
||This project will roll out a package of smart TRV’s and a control panel to 43 residents in order to ‘zone’ their heating. The technology provides residents with real-time consumption data, which may encourage them to reduce their usage. Smart thermostats learn how long it takes to heat a room and can reduce the energy wasted overheating a room if users set timers to come on sooner than needed. They can use smart phone information to heat homes as residents return home, to ensure a comfortable temperature on entry.The project will install and evaluate three different models of smart TRV systems. These are the Honeywell Evohome, the Heatmiser neo and the Heat Genius.
||Interviews will be conducted with a sample of households to capture energy consumption behaviours and previous energy expenditure.This will be supplemented with thermal data-logging in the living room and main bedroom using recognised calibrated stand-alone devices. Energy meter readings will also be provided by householders. Monitoring will be carried out for 12 months, including a full winter heating period.
||It is estimated that zoned heating by smart measures can reduce bills by 20-30%. This project will assess and compare whether these devices lead to a reduction in energy usage and therefore bills, particularly for prepayment meter residents, and whether they feel more able to switch to a credit meter.
