Heating your house intuitively (CP787)
|LEAD AGENCY:||South Holland District Council|
|PROJECT SUMMARY:||This project will install smart thermostats which monitor and change heating settings automatically in 58 homes. The Nest learning thermostat is an intuitive smart device which detects people in the room/home, changing the heating based on the need for heat. The Tado smart thermostat determines the heating requirements of the home based on occupancy or how far away from home you are. The Netatmo smart thermostat creates a heating schedule based on the occupants’ lifestyle and habits.
Smart thermostats provide real-time consumption which shows users how much energy they are using, possibly enabling a reduction in energy consumption. They also calculate how long it takes to heat a room so can reduce energy wasted overheating a room where users set timers to come on sooner than needed. This technology will be fitted in a wide range of households including: the less mobile; a range of age groups; a local housing scheme with households suffering with dementia. .
|EVALUATION METHODOLOGY:||Interviews will be a conducted with a sample of households to capture energy consumption behaviours and previous energy expenditure.This will be supplemented by carrying out thermal data-logging in the living room and main bedroom using recognised calibrated stand-alone devices, energy meter readings will also be provided by householders. Monitoring will take place over 12 months, including a full winter heating period.|
|PROJECT OUTCOMES:||It is claimed that smart thermostats can reduce bills by 20-30%. This project will assess whether these devices lead to a reduction in energy use/bills by removing the need for manual heating adjustment, and offer a comparison between three different smart thermostats.|
