Course audience

The course is designed for those providing householders with advice about domestic renewable technologies.

Pre-requisite

No prior knowledge of the subject is required, however, as this is a level 3 qualification delegates will require basic literacy and numeracy skills. The course will include written activities as well as calculating fuel bills; calculating running costs of electrical appliances and converting temperatures using simple formulas which will be provided.

Course aim

The course aims to provide delegates with an introduction to domestic renewable technologies, the factors to consider when installing these technologies and some of the advantages and drawbacks associated with them.

Course objectives

Explain:

  • which renewable energy technologies might be appropriate for different circumstances
  • how the main renewable energy technologies work in the home – this will be a basic explanation rather than a detailed technical explanation
  • the main factors to consider before considering installing the technologies
  • the feed-in tariffs and Renewable Heat Incentive
  • general costs associated with installation and running the technologies
  • some of the main advantages and drawbacks for each technology

Course content

Over the two days of the course the following is covered.

Day One

  • Background to domestic renewable and low carbon technologies
  • Solar thermal hot water
  • Heat pumps – ground and air
  • Biomass – stoves and boilers
  • Preparation for the examination role play simulation

Day Two

  • Role play simulation
  • Solar photovoltaics
  • Micro and small wind turbines
  • Micro-hydro ad micro combined heat and power
  • Case studies and exam preparation

Exam outline

Assessment will consist of a one-day examination split into the following three sections:

Written Paper One (75 minutes)

  • Assessing knowledge of the domestic renewable and low carbon technologies, the factors to consider before installation, advantages and drawbacks.

Written Paper Two: Case Studies (30 minutes)

  • Assessing knowledge of the domestic renewable and low carbon technologies in given case scenarios.

Simulation (15-20 minutes)

  • Energy advisor role-play assessing competence when explaining to a client the varying issues regarding either solar thermal hot water or a biomass boiler.

Duration

Two days training plus a half-day examination.
