What works for the fuel poor?

There are currently around 5 million fuel poor households in the UK today. Fuel poverty is classed as spending over 10% of your income on heating a home. Most fuel poor clients will live in dwellings which are of an older age and poor thermal efficiency with in-efficient heating and hot water systems. These dwellings may also be in rural areas where gas is not an option and the clients will have to look for an alternative, more expensive fuel to heat their home. These fuels also tend to be prone to price fluctuation.

NEA works with manufacturers, research centres and clients to develop, implement and evaluate heating and insulation methods that could help alleviate fuel poverty.

Over the years NEA has carried out a number of projects to determine the types of system that can do this, and are still doing so by carrying out pilot trials with project funders.

These projects can be found in the previous projects and current projects section of this website.
