City & Guilds 6176 3 day Energy Awareness Course
This three-day course is designed for people who wish to gain an understanding of, or further their knowledge of, domestic energy efficiency. The course is geared towards supporting those who provide face-to-face advice on energy efficiency.
The course can lead to the City and Guilds 6176 qualification for those participants who choose to sit the final four-part examination. Course participants come from a range of organisations including local authorities, voluntary organisations, charities, utility companies and housing associations.
The 6176 qualification is recognised by the Code of Practice for Energy Efficiency Advice and also meets the knowledge requirements of specific units of NVQ Level 3 Provide Energy Efficiency Services.
The course prepares participants to deal with a variety of advice situations and to:
- identify a range of heating and hot water systems and appliances found in homes
- identify the type and function of controls on heating and hot water systems
- advise clients on the efficient and safe use of heating and hot water systems and appliances
- interpret domestic fuel cost data using reference materials
- advise clients on how to record gas and electricity consumption and work out costs
- inform clients of ways of paying for gas and electricity
- identify the potential to improve the energy efficiency in a range of dwellings
- state the grant aid available for domestic energy efficiency measures
- advise clients on how to avoid condensation and how to take remedial action where condensation dampness exists.
Participants must have basic literacy and numeracy skills, be able to use a calculator and be able to extract and interpret data from given tables.

Energy Awareness for Health Professionals
Are your clients living in cold damp homes? Then this course may be for you. It is designed to give a functional overview of the main issues in tackling fuel poverty; it covers topics such as;
- Impact of fuel poverty in Wales
- Dampness and ill health
- Heating and preventing heat loss
- Financing and budgeting for fuel
The course also highlights the help which is available at a local level, how to link up with these agencies and how to refer people for further advice.
The course can be delivered locally from a suitable training venue.

Energy Efficiency Awareness Sessions for Communities First
Cutting your Energy Bills
This awareness session is a two hour session offered free to Communities First areas. The session is very informal and is designed in partnership with Community First Areas to help meet specific community/ individual's needs. The aim is to inform community members of the advice and resources available to help combat fuel poverty. It also aims to enhance their understanding of energy efficiency and money saving tips.
