North East Fuel Poverty Declaration

Welcome to the North East Fuel Poverty Declaration site.

About the declaration:

The declaration has been developed as a means to encourage action to tackle fuel poverty and provide affordable warmth for households in the North East of England.

The declaration provides a focus for both individuals and organisations across the North East to demonstrate their commitment to tackling fuel poverty and thus contribute to the achievement of UK Fuel Poverty Strategy commitments.

History of the declaration:

The declaration was originally developed by a sub-group of the former North East Domestic Energy Forum (NEDEF) and was initially launched in 2005.  The declaration is currently overseen by NEA in conjunction with the Carbon Action Network North East.
Partners recognise that the declaration is a working document and thus it is periodically reviewed to reflect ongoing policy and practice developments.

The Declaration celebrated it's fifth anniversary in September 2010 and marked the occassion with a partner event to showcase fuel poverty alleviation activity across the North East.  It also provided signatories with an opportunity to discuss future challenges and opportunities for partnership and other developments to address fuel poverty.

Signatories to date:

The declaration is variously supported by 51 organisations and individuals across the North East and the intention is to further promote the declaration to all relevant sectors. See the current signatories here.

What does the declaration aim to do?  The declaration acknowledges the multi-faceted nature of fuel poverty and its impact on individual households and the wider community.  It further supports the idea of individual and collective action to provide long-term sustainable solutions for low-income and other vulnerable fuel poor households.  A copy of the current declaration can be found here

Does the declaration commit individuals or organisations to take specific action?  The intention of the declaration is principally to provide a focus for action at a local level for individuals and organisations.  Thus we expect that individuals and organisations maintain an awareness of fuel poverty and remain supportive of actions to alleviate the problem.Signing the declaration is not a commitment to take forward or fund specific activity.  However we are supportive of any developments which seek to alleviate fuel poverty directly or indirectly.

How to demonstrate support for the declaration
Any individual or organisation is free to support the declaration. Signatories will receive their own copy of the declaration which acknowledges their individual or organisational commitment.  Thereafter we encourage you or your organisation to prominently display the declaration in your place of work, champion commitments to others and pay regard to the declaration in taking forward policy or practice developments either as a single agency or in partnership.

How is the declaration monitored?  Every year signatories will be encouraged to provide feedback on actions progressed in the year in support of the declaration.  Key developments will be showcased via this site with the consent of those concerned.  How do I find out more about the declaration?  For further information on the North East Fuel Poverty Declaration and/or to register your support please contact Claire Green, NEA Regional Co-ordinator on 0191 261 5677 or alternatively email: claire.green@nea.org.uk
