NEA Cymru Annual Conference

NEA  Cymru Annual Conference

28th January 2009, Cardiff Millennium Stadium

The fuel poverty agenda urgently needs to get back on track. With the number of households in fuel poverty rising over the past three years, the UK Government and the Welsh Assembly Government have accepted that they will not meet their target to eradicate fuel poverty amongst vulnerable groups by 2010. In addition the Assembly Government’s target to eliminate fuel poverty amongst social housing by 2012 and its target to eradicate fuel poverty by 2018 are looking harder to reach. The Assembly Government Minister with responsibility for fuel poverty, Jane Davidson, has reiterated her commitment to help tackle this problem and the Assembly Government is currently reviewing the Fuel Poverty Strategy and Wales’ Home Energy Efficiency Scheme as part of the One Wales Commitment to develop a National Energy Efficiency and Savings Plan.

The aim of this conference is to provide the opportunity to identify the actions that need to be taken to ensure that the Welsh Fuel Poverty Commitments are back on track.

The plenary sessions at this year’s conference will cover the following issues:

  • what support is needed to help vulnerable groups and the role Commissioners play in this agenda;
  • how government action at Europe, Westminster and the Welsh Assembly Government can  help combat fuel poverty in Wales;  and getting the voluntary, government and private sectors to work together to tackle fuel poverty.

The main conference sessions are supported by eight workshops covering an extensive range of topics. Two of these workshops will include representatives from older people’s forums, children and young people’s partnerships, and Communities First areas.

All workshops will be interactive and allow participants to have their say, ask questions and share knowledge and experience. The conference will also have exhibition space and will encourage delegates to network, meet colleagues working in different areas and plant seeds for future collaborations!

We are grateful for the support of npower, sponsors of this year's conference, and would also like to thank the Welsh Assembly Government for its continued support.

We look forward to seeing you there.
