ONS confirms the highest number of excess winter deaths since 1999/2000

NEA comments on the shocking news that there were 43,900 excess winter deaths in England and Wales in 2014/15

Date: 25 November 2015

Maria Wardrobe, NEA external affairs director comments: “This huge jump in excess winter deaths is alarming. We know cold homes are a huge contributor to these needless deaths. This must act as a painful reminder to the UK government that the most frail members of our society need much more help to keep their homes warm and that cold homes remain a bigger killer across the UK than road accidents, alcohol or drug abuse.

By acting responsibly, the government can not only stop these needless deaths, they can also save national health services in England and Wales from being forced to spend £22 billion treating cold-related morbidity over the next 15 years.”
