Solar thermal biomass and solar thermal only (CP754)
|LEAD AGENCY:||Ceredigion County Council|
|OTHER PARTNERS:||Tai Ceredigion, Cymdeithas Tai Cantref (registered social landlords)|
|PROJECT SUMMARY:||The project will install and evaluate Biomass and / or Solar Thermal panels on sixteen properties in rural wales. Solar thermal and biomass heating will be installed in seven properties, and solar thermal will be installed in nine properties for comparison. The target community is an isolated off gas rural community, with housing which suffers from poor SAP ratings, high energy costs and are designated “hard to treat”.
The project will evaluate the technical and social impact of the biomass and complementary solar thermal technologies in this community.
|EVALUATION METHODOLOGY:||Interviews will be conducted with a sample of households to capture behaviours and previous energy expenditure. Interviews will be repeated with householders after a winter of using their new systems to establish what changes the project has made to comfort and energy expenditure.
Household interviews will be supplemented with automated data logging – gathering thermal data from inhabitable spaces, and manual energy meter readings will be taken regularly by householders. Heat meters will be used to determine the output of the biomass boilers and solar thermal panels. Monitoring will be for 12 months, and will include a full winter heating period.
|PROJECT OUTCOMES:||NEA is interested in establishing the effectiveness of Biomass heating as an alternative to more traditional systems.
This scheme will target hard to reach vulnerable communities in some of the most inefficient housing.
The project will evaluate the household impact on heating bills and comfort levels, whilst considering the change on SAP ratings for the properties. Results will be used to inform interested parties on addressing the comparative high cost of heating rural off gas hard to treat properties.
