PROJECT SUMMARY: This project will test a number of different technologies across a cluster of 18 off-gas properties on the same residential street in Durham. All properties currently rely on conventional electric storage heating.

A combination of infra-red space heating, Solar PV, and battery energy storage will be installed. Four properties will receive Dimplex Quantum storage heaters to directly compare performance with the infra-red heating. A similar number of properties in the same close are on-gas and will be monitored by Riverside Group for comparison

EVALUATION METHODOLOGY: NEA will conduct interviews with a sample of households to capture behaviours and previous energy expenditure. Household interviews will be supplemented by electrical and thermal data logging conducted with recognised calibrated standalone devices, plus manual energy meter readings from householders.

PV generation will be monitored through existing data capture through the PV inverter system. Riverside is also monitoring the heating systems via infrared real-time facility within data loggers. Riverside is also monitoring the gas heating systems in similar properties NEA will verify this data. Monitoring will be for 12 months, and will include a full winter heating period.

PROJECT OUTCOMES:
  • The project will produce data in relation to the the running costs of operating these different units both in “combination” and “against each other” and to traditional “gas central heating”.
  • Householder experience in comfort levels and ease of using the various systems will also be compared.

Extended TIF programme, results due summer 2018
Monitoring and evaluation of this programme will continue during the winter of 2017/2018, doing so will enhance the quality of data and enable a comprehensive evaluation to take place.
