Installation of wireless zone controls, weather compensator and boiler flue recovery systems (CP751)

|PROJECT SUMMARY:||This project replaces existing room thermostats with Honeywell’s Evohome intelligent heating control system. The technology will allow residents to set up heating zones in their home, which can be set at different temperatures to one another. The system can also be controlled remotely with a phone app.
In addition to the heating control system, Potterton Multifit (Gas Saver) Flue Gas Heat Recovery Systems (FGHRS) will also be fitted to the boilers. FGHRS recycle the heat within the waste flue gases discharged from the boiler. This recovered heat is used to pre-heat the cold water entering the boiler, thereby lowering the amount of energy needed to warm the water up to the required level, so increasing boiler efficiency to 97% (manufacturer’s data).
A Potterton MultiFit weather compensator will also be fitted to the boiler which is also claimed to help the boiler perform more efficiently.
|EVALUATION METHODOLOGY:||Interviews will be conducted with a sample of households to capture energy consumption behaviour and previous energy expenditure.
Household interviews will be supplemented with thermal data logging conducted with recognised calibrated standalone devices, gas meter event logging where possible, and energy meter readings from householders. Heat meters and flow meters will also be placed on a sub-sample of homes receiving FGHRS only to assess heat transferred to cold-water input. Monitoring will be for 12 months, and must include a full winter heating period.
|PROJECT OUTCOMES:||This project aims to test the manufacturer’s claims and evaluate the energy savings, comfort levels and life cycle costs. The dis-aggregation of the technologies into sub groups enables NEA to determine the performance of each individual technology in relation to the factors mentioned above.
The project will note the impact that boiler efficiency measures (FGHR) have on energy costs on already efficient boilers.
