Heating Controls

PROJECT SUMMARY: This project is to install Climote, Hive HUB, and NEST smart heating controls into 210 social rented properties (75 of each of the first two, 80 of the latter), a mixture of 2-3 bed houses, 1-2 bed bungalows and 1-2 bed flats across Widnes and Runcorn. As part of the consultation, householders will be given ‘easy-to-read’ facts about the system promoting the advantages of introducing such technology into their homes as well as the benefits both financially and overall control. Benchmarking data will be used to evidence the benefits over short and long periods of time
EVALUATION METHODOLOGY: Conduct interviews with a sample of households to capture behaviours and previous energy expenditure.

Supplement these with thermal data-logging in living and main bedrooms using recognised calibrated standalone devices, and manual energy meter readings requested from householders. Gas event loggers will monitor gas use in a sub-sample of homes. The same monitoring will be carried out in a control group of five homes which did not receive smart controls. Monitoring will be 12 months, including a full winter heating period.

PROJECT OUTCOMES:
  • NEA is keen to assess and compare the effectiveness and ease of use of these three different types of heating controls to make energy savings in a variety of homes.
  • Households will have more control over their heating system as they are able to control them when away from the property, reducing wasted heat and the costs associated with this.
