NEA ANNUAL CONFERENCE 2008

NEA’s Annual Conference – ‘Tackling Fuel Poverty: Leaving no stone unturned’ – is to be held at The University of Birmingham from Monday 15-Wednesday 17 September 2008.

BirminghamThe Westminster and Scottish Governments, and the Assemblies of Wales and Northern Ireland share an interim target to end fuel poverty for vulnerable households by 2010, but it is widely accepted that this target can not now be reached with current levels of resources and policies. All administrations are committed to ending fuel poverty for all households by 2016 (Wales 2018).  The NEA Conference will provide the opportunity to debate how to get the UK Strategy back on track in this all encompassing Fuel Poverty Conference.

The plenary sessions at this year’s conference will cover the following issues:

  • The UK Fuel Poverty Strategy – Action in the four countries
  • The respective roles of Government, the supply industry and the regulator
  • The social, environment and economic impacts of tackling fuel poverty

The Minister of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Phil Woolas MP, will provide the Ministerial Address and has been invited to participate in the first plenary along with Jane Davidson AM, Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing, National Assembly for Wales; Margaret Ritchie, Minister for Social Development, Northern Ireland Assembly and Dr Janet Edgell, Fuel Poverty Team Leader, Scottish Government.

The main conference sessions are supported by nine seminars covering an extensive range of topics (including a site visit allowing the opportunity to visit Summerfield Eco Village) and four workshops including two live focus groups. The workshops will allow participants to have their say, ask questions and share knowledge and experience. An exhibition of products and services from over 35 companies will be a main focus for the conference. The conference will also offer a varied social itinerary offering informal networking opportunities. NEA is grateful for the support of npower, sponsors of this year's conference, and would also like to thank Defra for its support.
